The Justice Secretary has announced that legislation for no-fault divorce will be introduced when parliamentary time allows.
Current law requires the applicant to give reason for wanting a divorce on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour or adultery, for example.
Haley Farrell, Head of Family Law at Broudie Jackson Canter comments:
It is very welcome news that the Justice Secretary has confirmed that legislation for no-fault divorce will be introduced as soon as parliamentary time is available. The current divorce system can often increase anxiety and acrimony in what is already a stressful and emotional time. This can also have a damaging impact on children of the family. Such reforms will end the ‘blame game’ between couples seeking divorce and hopefully reduce conflict.
We will have to wait and see exactly what happens, but this announcement is a step in the right direction that will make a positive difference to so many families.
