The World Cup is a welcome celebration for plenty of people across the country. Unfortunately for many, the kick off of this year’s World Cup doesn’t strike the same joy. Research has suggested that domestic violence increases by as much 38 per cent during the World Cup when the national team loses. This follows research that claims of domestic violence increased when England both lost and won matches during previous tournaments.

Why does this happen?
There is no one thing that can make someone suddenly become an abuser. A favourite football team losing a big football match is not to blame for the abuse, likewise neither is too much alcohol, or an argument gone awry. The only thing that can be blamed for domestic abuse is the abuser.
The patterns of abuse, however, can certainly be influenced depending on what is happening in the abusers life. For example, a combination of too much alcohol at the pub, mixed with the excitement of the return of football, combined with the defeat of their favourite team, can make for an incredibly dangerous cocktail.
The most important thing to note here that we can never stress enough is that the victim is never to blame, even if the abuser tells you that their actions are a result of your behaviour. This is simply untrue and is important to remember this.
How can we help you?
Too often women and men are subjected to domestic abuse and suffer in silence, further risking their safety and, in some cases, the safety of their children.
Many are reluctant to report this behaviour out of fear that doing so will only make things worse. It is important that those subjected to domestic abuse seek urgent help and advice to obtain appropriate protective orders. A protective order is an order that can be put in place to protect you and any relevant child from a violent abuser by blocking them from having access to you.
Our family team here at Broudie Jackson Canter are experienced in obtaining appropriate protective orders. We will deal with your case in a sensitive and confidential manner, and advise you as to all of your options.
We understand how absolutely terrifying these experiences can be, and the weight and importance of what is at risk by reaching out is never lost on us. This is why we handle cases of domestic violence with the upmost care and discretion.
