I did something rather foolish yesterday. I published a blog with a prediction about the fate of Liverpool FC and the European Cup this year, suggesting that the final in Madrid seemed to be off the agenda. The thought of Liverpool scoring four goals without reply and without their two world class strikers seemed beyond their reach. It is true that they had not had good fortune in Barcelona in the first leg, but so is the nature of football!
Last night was another chapter in Liverpool's love affair with the Champions League. I think it was their greatest ever European night and I say that because the victory was not down to any one player or particular star, but to a remarkable team effort. They had a mental toughness as a team and a determination to win. Barcelona were psyched out of the game, to which the crowd played a massive part.
The balance sheet of the Fenway Group must look very healthy this morning. What an investment they made, but the victory will also have an effect on the balance sheet of the city of Liverpool, which once again has had its brand enhanced by this remarkable performance. Above all it demonstrates the creative culture of its people, who themselves have a never give up attitude to life. That was shown in spades through Hillsborough. Long may this attitude continue, not only through sport but also in our economy.
We have a long way to go before all our people share in the success of the city. Many are left on the side-lines through lack of opportunity, funding or poor health. So I again return to Colin Dolan and his Mental Health Therapy Football team. Well done to him and to everyone who is trying to make a positive difference through sport,
Here’s to Italy and now Spain in the weeks ahead!
