The event, held in our Walker House office, was  organised by Kira Henry and Ryan Drummond, Covid Inquiry Caseworkers and diversity collective members.

We were honoured to welcome Chantelle Lunt, the director of the Merseyside Alliance for Racial Equality (MARE), who delivered a captivating talk on the importance of reclaiming narratives for black communities. This theme is about empowering black individuals and communities worldwide to take control of their stories, celebrate their heritage, and ensure their voices are heard.

During the event, Chantelle Lunt’s presentation, titled ‘Reclaiming Narratives: The Role of Liverpool’s Black Civil Rights Movement in Promoting Racial Equality’, focused on the ongoing struggle against racism and the pursuit of racial equality in Liverpool. She provided an insightful exploration of Liverpool’s historic links to the transatlantic slave trade and its modern-day repercussions.

Chantelle’s talk was not only informative but also deeply inspiring, encouraging all attendees to reflect on the importance of understanding and reclaiming the histories and stories that shape our communities.

Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE, in her commentary for Black History Month 2024, highlighted the significance of this theme, she said:

In today’s world, stories are powerful tools that shape how we understand our past, present, and future. For too long, the history of Black communities has been told through lenses that often misrepresent, oversimplify, or entirely overlook the rich and diverse experiences of those who lived it. But 2024 is set to be a transformative year. Black History Month UK has unveiled its compelling theme: Reclaiming Narratives."

At Jackson Lees Group, we are committed to celebrating diversity and promoting equality and we look forward to continuing this important dialogue raised during this event, whilst continuing to support initiatives that foster inclusivity and understanding.

Throughout October, Jackson Lees Group has been actively promoting Black History Month through various initiatives, including educational workshops, cultural events, and social media campaigns. These efforts aim to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and beyond.

As we reflect on the theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ it is crucial to recognise that this is not just a one-month effort but an ongoing commitment to understanding and celebrating the rich histories and contributions of black communities. At Jackson Lees Group, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone’s stories are valued, shared and heard.
