1 - It is more common than you think
In the latest figures provided by the Office for National Statistics there were 101,669 divorces in England and Wales, that is, around 42% of marriages end in divorce. Of these, half are expected to occur in the first 10 years of marriage. It was also demonstrated that divorce among same-sex couples had tripled when compared with the previous year.
2 - So how long into a marriage before couples get divorced?
You’ve heard of the seven year itch and the four year glitch – well currently the average duration of marriage at the time of divorce is around 12.2 years.
3- What’s the most common grounds being used for divorce?
With divorce proceedings – the main reason in law, is always “irretrievable break down of marriage” but this must be supported by one of the five grounds for divorce. The latest figures show that unreasonable behaviour was the most common reason for divorcing couples. Of all of the divorces issued- 52% of wives and 37% of husbands issued stating this was the main reason for divorce.
4 - Can you be too old to get divorced?
It’s not just the young who get divorced! There were 9,381 men and 6,227 women aged over 60 who got divorced in the recent statistics. So whatever your age, if you feel that you are stuck in a marriage that doesn’t work, don’t be afraid of any stigma due to how old you are.
5 - So what’s the average age for divorce?
The average age of couples marrying is between 34-37 years old.
The average age for divorce in opposite sex couples was highest among men aged 45-49 and woman aged 40-44 years.
6 - Once bitten?
Statistics have shown that 50% of first marriages, 67% of second and 73% of third marriages end in divorce.
7 - What about the children?
