All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

- Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Today is Human Rights Day, observed across the world to celebrate and empower Human Rights. Upholding human rights has become more important than ever, as there is still more campaigning needed for those individuals who are denied their rights. I hope that we can always protect and campaign for these rights, and create a fairer and more equal society. This year, the theme for Human Rights Day is ‘Youth Standing up for Human Rights’. To quote the United Nations,

Young people have always been major drivers of political, economic and social transformation. They are at the forefront of grassroots mobilizations for positive change and bring fresh ideas and solutions for a better world.

I am a strong believer that positive change can come through the young when they are supported by others.

Jackson Lees Group is committed to making a positive difference.  Ever since I have joined the business, I have enjoyed the inclusive atmosphere. As a young Muslim, who does not necessarily look like anyone else in the legal profession, I have felt that I am equal to everyone else. I have attended many conferences, seminars, and networking events where I have felt that I did not necessarily fit into the profession, due to the lack in diversity and the fact that we do not have a representative legal profession. Jackson Lees Group has made a positive difference to me as an individual, and is continuously supporting my personal development, to become the best version of myself whilst practicing in law. I took the initiative, and was supported by everyone in the business, in setting up the Diversity Committee where we can celebrate diversity, inclusivity and equality; as we are all equal no matter what our background is.

The Diversity Committee will be making a positive difference to, not only our business, but to our city and most importantly to young individuals who do not see themselves represented in the profession. May we always embrace and promote equality; as we are all the same.
