Statistics show that mental health problems amongst the student population are on the increase. In fact mental health problems are as common among students as they are in the general population. Moving into a big city like Liverpool can cause an immense amount of stress and anxiety. However, this is completely normal so fear not, you are not alone.
This year has been a good one as far as raising mental health awareness is concerned and this is due to the hard work from groups such as HeadsTogether. It would appear that more and more people are talking about their mental health. Research has recently revealed that more students at University are seeking help with mental health issues. This is encouraging because historically mental health has always been a bit of a taboo subject, especially for males, and something that people in general find hard to talk about.
However research has also shown that suicide among students is on the increase despite suicide among the general population falling by 4.3% the lowest since 2011. In 2015, research showed that a record 134 students took their own lives. This is shocking and a needless loss of life because after all suicide is preventable. Research has also shown that the number of students dropping out of university is also on the increase.
