Picture it: you’ve just moved and now you’re putting up a Christmas tree in your new property. You’ve done it, the move is over and the property is truly yours.

If you celebrate Christmas and are looking to move, you may well be dreaming of that. It’s the proof that the move is complete and you really have managed to put the first stamp on your new home!

As Angela Hesketh, Head of Residential Property, can tell you, it’s not always that straightforward:

The image of putting up your tree in your new home is a very romantic and lovely one, and sometimes it might feel like solicitors and estate agents are the ones getting in the way of it.

But the reality is very different!

The legal stuff around buying your home might seem like it’s taking too long, but it’s very important to help make sure that you don’t have any problems after you move in.

This time is crucial to invest, and it’s even more crucial to factor this in when it comes to planning your move. After all, the average house sale or purchase currently takes around 16 weeks.

You’re best off speaking to your lawyer to see if your timescale is achievable to avoid disappointment.

Don’t rush it – it is essential that the property is right for you. It’s also key that you are given the opportunity to read, plan, and ask all the questions about the property that you need the answer to. It’s important to know what you’re committing to before you move in.

There’s so much to consider when you’re looking to buy a property, and everyone knows that Christmas takes just as much consideration and energy. Having to organise and sort all sorts of affairs and matter for Christmas is stressful enough without the added pressure of moving house on top of it all! Not only that, but most law firms dealing with conveyancing will be closed between Christmas and the New Year. It’s worth bearing this in mind when you are planning your move, as it can change your timings.

Why not move in January and give yourself something to look forward to in the New Year? After all, a property really isn’t just for Christmas!

You will be just as pleased to be moving into your new home in the New Year, especially if you know you were able to avoid potential additional stress over the festive period.

It’s better to be realistic and manage expectations by talking to your lawyer, that way you won’t find yourself facing the upset of not being able to move in before Christmas.

At Jackson Lees, we pride ourselves on helping you achieve your dream of owning your home and we want to make sure that this is the happiest possible time for you. We will act in your best interests, helping you every step of the way to ensure that your home move is completed on time.
