For families and couples looking for family law advice, uncertainty and negative headlines can create more stress, leading to uncertainty during a crucial time in your life. That is why fellow family lawyers and I are so keen to help people know where they stand and take the pain out of the process.
Mediation is one of the ways that we can help people know where they stand, and it’s an approach that is supported by Resolution, a community of family lawyers who specialise in helping separating parties reach amicable conclusions.

Mediation is an extremely useful tool to help you reach agreement and resolve conflict during separation, whether you need family law advice regarding divorce, cohabitation or children issues. The benefits of mediation include the following:-
- Less costly than instructing lawyers on a long-term basis;
- Helps you to reach agreement that you feel you’ve been involved in reaching, rather than being told by a Court;
- The neutral position of the mediator provides a pragmatic approach to your situation;
- Less conflict for yourself and your ex-partner, and more importantly, for children.
Several members of our Family Law team at Jackson Lees, including myself, are members of Resolution. Resolution is a community of legal professionals specialising in family law in order to help separating parties reach amicable conclusions, both in relation to financial and children issues, in a constructive way.
We’re proud to be supporting Family Mediation Week alongside Resolution.

Covering the costs of mediation
You may be able to obtain financial assistance to help with the cost of mediation.
Legal Aid funding is available if you meet certain criteria. Additionally, a new scheme set up by the Family Mediation Council and the Ministry of Justice offers up to £500 towards the costs of mediation when resolving children issues.
It’s important to note that this is a temporary scheme that will end when the allocated Government funding has been used up. If you’re considering mediation to resolve financial issues, you may want to act sooner rather than later.
Want to know more about family law advice and mediation?
If you’re looking for more information, the Family Mediation Council hosts a yearly Family Mediation Week aimed at providing more information about mediation and how we can continue to assist clients
The Family Mediation week for 2024 takes place the w/c 22nd January.
As family lawyers, we regularly refer clients to mediation services within Wirral and Merseyside and are happy to provide you with advice and guidance during the mediation process.
You should also bear in mind that even if your matter isn’t suitable for mediation, the Courts will generally not accept any application for family law orders, such as for child arrangements and resolution of matrimonial finances, unless mediation has been attempted in the first instance. There are, of course, exemptions such as in cases where there has been domestic abuse (we would never encourage or make a referral when our client feels that it would be unsafe to do so).
If you require any family law advice or assistance with the mediation process, please contact our Family Law department on 0151 909 5061.
