I am a Prison Law Consultant specialising in representing women prisoners. I cover all aspects of prison law including advocacy at parole hearings and I have full conduct of the case.
A little about me
I am totally dedicated and passionate about the work I do. I decided to specialise in representing women because they are often overlooked in the criminal justice system despite there being some significant differences in practice. I approach every case with an open and non-judgemental mind and I am totally committed to effectively representing each client. I find it particularly rewarding to help clients navigate through the parole process towards their release.
My experience
I have been practising in prison as a specialist in representing women prisoners since 1997. I have extensive practical experience of all types of prison law and considerable knowledge of the female criminal justice system. I act for legally aided and private paying clients.
I was a member on the Executive Committee of the Association of Prison Lawyers (APL) for 7 years and the Parole Board lead for 3 years. I work closely with PAS (Prisoners Advice Service) and I hold a monthly clinic for them at Styal to ensure that the women can still receive prison law advice even when it is not covered by legal aid. I am also a member of the Women Prisoners Justice Group.
I have a keen interest in research into women in the criminal justice system. I completed a Griffins fellowship into the challenges women lifers face prior to and on release. I have provided training for Datalaw, APL, PAS and in women prisons for prisoners and staff. I have worked as a lecturer in criminal justice at Liverpool John Moore’s University and Liverpool Hope university. I have also worked in a voluntary capacity as a Chair of Youth Offender Panels due to my interest in the restorative justice model.
