In the past, different classes of visitors to the UK required many different classes of Visa – whether it was for a family visit, a business trip or as a tourist. Today the system has been simplified – gone are special Visas for children, academics, sportsmen, entertainers and businessmen and in their place is the Standard Visitor Visa.
Do I need a Visit Visa for short trips?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can travel to the UK for holidays or short trips without a visa. Certain other nationalities can also come to the UK for holidays or short trips without needing a visa in advance. You can check if you need a visa to visit the UK on the UKVI website.
For nationals of all other countries, you will need to get confirmation from the UK that you can travel here before booking flights. People visit the UK for many reasons such as tourism, visiting family members, for business, undergoing private medical treatment or performing at events.

What do I need to show for a Visit Visa?
Generally, visitors in all categories will need to show:
- The purpose of their visit to the UK and that this is for a permitted reason (i.e. you can come to attend a meeting or conference but could not undertake paid work).
- How the visitor will be maintained. Can the cost of flights be met? Is accommodation being provided by a family member or your employer? Are there sufficient funds for you to maintain yourself for the proposed duration of the visit?
- Why you will return home. It is helpful to demonstrate the links you have in your country of residence and why you will return e.g. family, jobs, and other commitments.

Do I need a Visit Visa for private medical treatment?
Those who wish to enter the UK to undergo private medical treatment must also provide additional documents from their doctor confirming the procedures they will be undergoing in the UK and evidence that they can afford them.
Visit visas can be issued for anywhere between 6 months and 10 years. Please note that, in any event, visitors must not spend more than 6 months in the UK in any 12-month rolling period.
You do not need to be in your country of nationality to apply for a visit visa. This can be done from anywhere in the world, so if you want to add the UK to your travel itinerary, this could be done during an existing holiday.
